FCT Primary School Pupils Set to Resume Classes as LEA Teachers End Six-Month Strike

After a prolonged six-month shutdown, primary school pupils across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are expected to resume academic activities as teachers under the Local Education Authority (LEA) prepare to return to the classrooms. The development follows positive signals from the government, including partial payment of salaries owed under the new minimum wage structure.

Fusion Chronicle Nigeria confirms that as of yesterday, some LEA staff began receiving their June salaries, marking a significant step toward resolving the salary-related crisis that crippled learning in public primary schools across the territory. The strike, which began due to the non-payment of the approved minimum wage and salary arrears, had left thousands of pupils at home, raising concerns over learning gaps and educational setbacks.

Teachers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) had consistently demanded the full implementation of the new minimum wage and better working conditions. Their grievances gained support from parents and civil society organizations, who accused the FCT Administration of neglecting basic education.

With salary payments underway, education stakeholders are optimistic that full academic activities will resume in the coming days. However, the NUT has urged the FCT authorities to expedite the payment process to all affected teachers and ensure that such delays do not recur.

The resumption is expected to bring relief to both pupils and parents, as well as restore stability to the basic education system in the nation’s capital.
