“I Need To Meet Governor Alia Before I Die” – First Republic Senator Suemo Chia
In an emotional moment during a thanksgiving mass held at NKST Church, High Level Makurdi, to mark the second anniversary of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration, a touching appeal was made by one of Benue State’s foremost elder statesmen, Senator Suemo Chia.
The octogenarian, a former senator in Nigeria’s First Republic, was spotted sitting quietly at the church entrance—clearly hoping for a chance to see the governor. However, security protocols and the large turnout of party supporters and worshippers made it difficult for the elderly statesman to fulfill his wish.

“I cannot see well again,” he said in a frail but determined voice. “I have come to see Alia. I saw him once, and when I tried to see him at the Government House, they blocked me—as if I was looking for a political appointment.”
Senator Suemo Chia, who has met and advised several past governors of the state, expressed a deep personal desire to speak with Governor Alia before the end of his life.
“I want to offer my advice to him before I die,” he stated with clarity and conviction.
The elder statesman, now clearly in the twilight of his life, was led into the church by an aide. Observers noted his failing eyesight and limited mobility, underscoring the urgency of his plea.
His residence is located near the Makurdi Club, close to the home of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, beside the Ministry of Justice.
This public appeal is now a call to all well-meaning citizens and aides of the governor to help facilitate what may be one of the last wishes of a man who served his state and nation with dedication.
Senator Suemo Chia’s words remind us of the value of history, wisdom, and honoring those who laid the foundations of leadership in Benue and Nigeria at large.
May this call reach Governor Alia’s ears—and may the elder statesman’s voice be heard.
