The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a 20-year-old man, Akeem Sumonu, for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl in the Olodo Community of Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State. According to reports from Fusion Chronicle, law enforcement officials arrested the suspect on Tuesday, with operatives from the local security post involved in the operation.
The survivor’s mother, identified only as Christiana, informed the police that the suspect allegedly violently attacked her daughter, raped her in October 2024, and later threatened her to keep it a secret.
The police source said due to the fear the suspect had instilled in the teenager, she kept the incident a secret until her mother noticed unusual changes in her behaviour and injuries sustained during the alleged assaulte
The state police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Omolola Odutola, said, “The victim hid the incident from her parents until the complainant noticed unusual signs on her body.
“She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone.”
Odutola noted that the situation worsened when the medical report on the survivor revealed she was eight weeks pregnant, with the pregnancy suspected to be a result of the crime.
“The suspect has been arrested and detained. Further investigation will take place once the case is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Odutola added.
