Federal Government Halts Work on Sagamu-Iperu Road Due to Quality Issues

The Federal Government has ordered a halt to construction on the 12-kilometer Sagamu-Iperu Road, located near the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

This directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, during a site inspection of road projects in Lagos and Ogun states on Thursday.

Sen. Umahi voiced his dissatisfaction with both the quality of work and the pace of construction on the road. He has set a seven-day deadline for the contractor to address the identified issues, including the removal of the existing stone base.

In addition, the minister instructed the contractor to utilize proper equipment, specifically the right milling machine and an appropriate mixture for the stone base.

He emphasized the need for a swift resumption and acceleration of the construction work.

During the inspection, Umahi noted that the contractor had installed all ramps and retaining walls on certain bridges; however, he raised concerns about the condition of some piers, which were found to have rusted rods. He deemed this a serious safety risk, stating, “This is very dangerous. I am giving seven days to rectify these issues.”

To address the situation, Umahi mentioned that he would leave behind the head of the design team to work through the weekend to produce a comprehensive drawing and cost estimate for necessary amendments.

He stressed the urgency of the matter, highlighting that any collapse of the structures could result in multi-billion Naira reconstruction costs, whereas timely amendments would be significantly less expensive.
