Federal Polytechnic Offa Unveils OKIN EV1, Nigeria’s First Indigenous Electric Vehicle

The Federal Polytechnic, Offa has officially unveiled an indigenous electric vehicle, the OKIN EV1, marking a groundbreaking achievement in Nigeria’s push toward sustainable transportation.

The institution described the development as a milestone that highlights the potential of Nigerian research and innovation. According to spokesperson Olayinka Iroye, who quoted Dr. Olufemi Kehinde, Director of the Polytechnic’s Directorate of Assembly, Fabrication and Commercialisation of Research Products:

“This is a proof that Nigeria has the capacity to lead in innovative solutions to global challenges.”

The statement added that the OKIN EV1 goes beyond being just another automobile, representing “a symbol of what Nigerian institutions can achieve when knowledge meets creativity.”

The polytechnic has revealed plans to refine the prototype and consider mass production to deliver affordable, eco-friendly cars to Nigerians.

Iroye explained:

“Powered fully by electricity and complemented with a solar-energy feature, the vehicle is capable of covering an impressive 125 kilometres on a single charge, the equivalent of a round trip from Offa to Ilorin.”

Other modern features include:

Touchscreen display for real-time monitoring and control.

Reverse camera for enhanced safety.

Solar-powered extension system to prolong driving hours.

Despite challenges in sourcing local materials, the EV was developed within six months, beginning in 2024. The team’s resilience produced what many industry watchers describe as a game changer for Nigeria’s transport sector.

The institution credited the achievement to the support of Rector Dr. Kamoru Kadiri (FNSE), whose vision and commitment to innovation have motivated researchers.

“With the unveiling of OKIN EV1, Federal Polytechnic, Offa has set the stage for a future where locally-made technologies can compete globally. The feat is not only a victory for the institution, but also a shining example for Nigeria’s academic and industrial communities.”
