2025 Budget Defence Stalls as Reps Fail to Reconvene Post-Holiday

2025 Budget Defence Stalls as Reps Fail to Reconvene Post-Holiday
The anticipated defence of the 2025 budget estimates by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) before various House Committees failed to commence on Tuesday.
As of 5:00 PM, there was no sign of activity in the designated committee rooms at the House of Representatives. A tour of the National Assembly complex revealed a deserted environment, far from its usual bustle.
Although the exact reason for the delay remains unclear, it is speculated that many lawmakers are yet to return from their Christmas and New Year holiday break.
The House is scheduled to resume plenary on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
With limited time to review the 2025 budget, there are indications that MDAs may have to appear before joint committees of the Senate and House to expedite the defence process.

Chairman Bichi had previously assured the public that lawmakers would thoroughly scrutinize the budget in the national interest. However, attempts to reach him for comments on the delay were unsuccessful. Similarly, his Deputy, Igarewey Enwo, did not respond to calls.
A committee chairman, speaking anonymously, suggested that consultations were still ongoing. The chairman added that lawmakers had already cut short their holiday break to prioritize the budget defence.
This delay raises questions about the readiness of the House to meet critical deadlines for the passage of the 2025 budget.
