THE STUDENTS’ Union (SU) of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, has urged students not to pay any school fees following the management’s decision to increase tuition.
In a statement by the President, Comrade Oyi Samuel Alechenu, on Wednesday, the Students Union rejected the proposed ₦35,000 increment, calling it an undue burden on students already grappling with the nation’s economic challenges.

The union emphasised that negotiations with the institution’s management had ended in deadlock, with no agreement reached.
Alechenu disclosed that the SU had initially opposed an earlier proposal to increase fees by ₦50,000, arguing that as a public institution, BSU should not impose financial hardships that could force students to drop out.
According to him, the management later revised the increment to ₦35,000, citing economic pressures and the need to improve university facilities.
However, the union maintained its stance against any increase.
Comrade Alechenu assured students that the union was actively engaging stakeholders and remained committed to advocating for improved infrastructure and service delivery without additional financial strain on students.
He acknowledged concerns about the delayed resumption of the academic session, attributing it to ongoing negotiations.
“The struggle continues, and we urge all students to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting further directives,” the SU President stated.
The union advised students to refrain from making any payments until an official directive is issued.
