Mother, Daughter Sentenced to Prison for Theft of Ponmo

A Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced a mother, Falilatu Amidu, and her daughter, Ayisatu, to six months in prison each for stealing dry ponmo, stock fish, and dried meat worth N1 million.

The defendants, residing at No. 21 Ago-Oko in Abeokuta, were found guilty on two counts: conspiracy and theft.

Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Odumosu determined that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence to establish the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Each was sentenced to six months imprisonment, with the option to pay a fine of N5,000.

Additionally, the court ordered both convicts to reimburse the complainant, Mrs. Kafayat Alao, N100,000 as restitution before they could avail themselves of the fine option.

Earlier, Prosecutor Insp. Kehinde Fawunmi informed the court that the theft occurred at Lafenwa market in August 2024.

He explained that Falilatu, who had previously assisted the complainant by carrying loads from her store, conspired with her daughter Ayisatu to steal a large sack containing dried meat, ponmo, and stock fish valued at N1 million.

Fawunmi recounted how the complainant, after asking Falilatu to help her pick up some goods, waited for over an hour without seeing her.

Concerned, Mrs. Alao went to the store, only to find Falilatu missing and the bag of goods stolen.

According to the prosecutor, Falilatu had taken the items and given them to Ayisatu, who was aware that they were stolen.

The actions of the defendants were found to violate sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State 2006.
