FG Targets 5 Million Homes for Clean Cooking Gas by 2030

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has announced that the Federal Government is aiming to transition five million Nigerian households to clean cooking methods by 2030 under its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) penetration initiative.
Speaking at the ongoing Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers in Lagos, Ekpo revealed that gas cylinders have already been distributed across most parts of the country, with the exception of the South-East region.
“We have launched the LPG penetration programme and distributed cylinders across five of the six geopolitical zones so far. This initiative targets women and youth, with the goal of moving five million homes to clean cooking by 2030,” he said.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has prioritized natural gas in Nigeria’s energy strategy to drive industrialisation, job creation, and increased access to clean, affordable energy.
“In alignment with this vision, we’ve expanded gas supply for industrial purposes, ensuring availability for manufacturing hubs, power generation, and industrial corridors. As of now, all industrial off-takers are receiving adequate gas supplies,” Ekpo noted.
He also highlighted progress on major gas infrastructure projects such as the OB3 and AKK pipelines, which aim to ensure nationwide gas delivery. He praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) for its role in advancing these efforts.
To improve gas accessibility, the government has promoted modular and scalable gas initiatives, including mini-LNG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations, designed to strengthen last-mile delivery and stimulate economic growth.
Ekpo further outlined the ministry’s commitment to building a sustainable energy future through increased gas utilisation. He stressed the role of digital technology, automation, and data-driven tools in enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions across the gas value chain.
“From reservoir monitoring to distribution analytics, technology will play a vital role in transforming our gas sector,” he said. “We continue to partner with industry stakeholders to drive innovation and strengthen the local supply chain by promoting local manufacturing of gas equipment, pipes, and other critical infrastructure.”
