Fire Destroys Food Items Worth Millions in Market Blaze
A late-night fire has gutted the popular Akinola Market, a major food commodity hub in Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State.
The market, known for its weekly operations every Friday, was engulfed in flames that reportedly started in the yam section after last Friday’s sales. The fire quickly spread to other areas, destroying food items valued at millions of naira.
Sola Omilana, a local resident, noted that many people visited the market early Saturday morning to sympathize with affected shop owners.

Confirming the incident, Kehinde Adeleke, spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State, revealed that the fire was caused by refuse set ablaze by shop owners after business hours.
“Preliminary findings showed that the fire was a result of dirt set on fire by shop owners after the day’s business. But they did not put out the fire before leaving the market at night,” Adeleke explained.
She further confirmed that food commodities worth millions of naira were lost in the incident.
