Five Dead in Plane Crash on Catalina Island, US
A devastating plane crash near Catalina Island claimed the lives of five individuals, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Following the crash, a 911 call was made to the Avalon Sheriff Station from a mobile device, reporting the incident and possible injuries. The caller provided vital GPS coordinates, allowing for a rapid emergency response.
First responders, including Avalon Station deputies, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Avalon Search and Rescue, and Avalon City Fire Department, quickly arrived at the crash site. The wreckage was found about a mile west of Catalina Island Airport, where authorities confirmed the tragic deaths of all five individuals on board. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), with assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Flight records indicate that the plane departed around 5:45 p.m. that day, and the National Weather Service reported no heavy fog advisories at the time of the incident.
Jennifer Gabris, a spokesperson for the NTSB, stated that investigators will examine radar data, weather conditions, maintenance logs, and the pilot’s medical history as part of their inquiry. Gabris added that the investigation will consider the human, mechanical, and environmental factors involved. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with the probable cause of the crash likely to be determined within one to two years.
Authorities have requested that anyone with relevant information about the crash, including details about the passengers’ health or other pertinent facts, contact the investigating agencies.
In a related tragedy, just last week, a single-engine plane crash in North Carolina resulted in the deaths of five people, including a child. Among those killed was Jason Campbell, 45, a commander in the Army’s Special Forces, along with Shashwat Ajit Adhikari, 31, Kate McAllister Neely, 39, and Matthew Arthur Fassnacht, 44. The identity of the child has not been released.
