Five injured as tanker rams into commercial bus in Lagos

Five people sustained injuries on Thursday in a road crash involving a petrol tanker and a commercial bus at Toyota Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed in a statement on Friday that the accident occurred near The Guardian newspaper headquarters and involved a PMS-laden tanker, registration number T28128LA, and a Volkswagen T4 bus, GGE 526 YG.

According to preliminary findings from the Oloto Police Division, the tanker suffered a sudden brake failure at high speed and crashed into the fully loaded bus.

LASTMA said its officers carried out a swift and coordinated rescue, evacuating five victims—three women, two men, including the bus driver. One victim was taken to a nearby hospital by a passerby, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency transported the others for emergency treatment.

The agency’s General Manager, Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the victims and wished them a speedy recovery. He blamed the crash on excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance, stressing that adherence to speed limits and proper mechanical checks—especially on braking systems—could have averted the incident.

He urged owners of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles to prioritise regular maintenance and implement continuous driver training, noting that “the sanctity of human life must remain paramount in road transport operations.”
