Five Traders Arrested for Woman’s Death in Ogun Market — Police
The Divisional Police Officer of the Ifo Police Division in Ogun State, SP Kamorudeen Olabisi, has confirmed the arrest of five suspects linked to the killing of a female trader, Mrs. Blessing Eze, at the Ifo market.
Olabisi made the disclosure on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting involving government officials, market leaders, security agencies, and traditional rulers, held at Winnas Hotel in Ifo.
According to reports, Eze was fatally stabbed by a thug on Friday after refusing to give money to hoodlums demanding “festive money.” The incident sparked outrage, prompting Igbo traders to shut down their businesses in protest, leading to multiple consultations with authorities.
Speaking at the meeting, Olabisi assured the public that all those responsible would be held accountable.
“All those involved in the killing will be arrested,” he stated. “So far, five suspects have been apprehended and are being transferred to Ilaro prison.”
He urged traders to report any criminal activity within the market for prompt police intervention.
“We can only act on what we know. If you witness anything suspicious, report it immediately,” Olabisi advised.
Also addressing the gathering, the Chairman of Ifo Local Government Area, Idris Kusimo, warned against unlawful levies in the market.
“Any individual caught extorting money from traders will face legal consequences,” he said.
The Baba L’oja of the Ifo Igbo market traders, Theophilus Ikpeghibumo, called on the government and security forces to end the extortion and intimidation faced by his community.
“We are not against legitimate revenue collection,” he said. “What we reject is illegal extortion and harassment. It’s lawlessness that must end.”
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ogun State Government, the Department of State Services, traditional institutions, and various market unions.
