The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is expected to release popular social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, on Tuesday, with plans to bring formal charges against him in court by Thursday, Vanguard has learned.
A high-ranking EFCC official, speaking under anonymity, confirmed on Monday that while Otse remains in custody, formal charges have yet to be filed.
His detention last Friday has triggered a wave of criticism, with many accusing the Commission of using its powers to silence dissent under the pretext of law enforcement.
Insider sources revealed that Otse is facing multiple potential charges, mostly linked to cyberstalking, following numerous petitions lodged against him.
The arrest has ignited a heated public debate both online and in the streets, with many interpreting it as an attack on free expression. Demonstrators gathered in Abuja’s Wuse area on Monday, carrying signs that read “Free VDM!” and “End Selective Justice!” to demand his immediate release.
VeryDarkMan, widely known for his fiery takes on societal and political issues, was taken into custody by EFCC agents on May 2.
As of the time of reporting, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
