Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the current administration has no hope of winning the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, El-Rufai, now a prominent leader in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, said his political calculations show Tinubu has no clear route to victory.
“Mark my words, Tinubu will come third in 2027. I’ve done the maths and there is simply no pathway for him to win in the first round. At best, Nigeria will face a run-off,” he declared.
El-Rufai challenged Nigerians to assess Tinubu’s government based on their own living conditions.
“Ask yourself this simple question: Is your life better today under Tinubu’s leadership?” he asked.
The former governor accused the administration of lacking sincerity, saying there is “not even the pretense of good intentions” in its governance approach.
On personal ambitions, El-Rufai dismissed any interest in becoming a minister again, noting that he had already served in that capacity at just 23 years old. He revealed he was considered for the energy ministry, where he had a clear reform agenda, but insisted he has no appetite for cabinet positions.
In a stunning political twist, El-Rufai once a key member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and an influential figure in Tinubu’s 2023 campaign has now aligned himself with opposition heavyweights Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Chibuike Amaechi in a new coalition aimed at unseating the ruling party.
He took a swipe at APC’s performance in the last election, pointing out that neither he nor Tinubu could deliver their own states.
“I was APC, but I didn’t win my state for the party. Tinubu himself lost Lagos,” he reminded.
On insecurity, El-Rufai accused the government of paying lip service, claiming that while officials boast about killing terrorists, the same elements remain visible “roaming the streets.”
Commenting on promises by some of his new allies, such as Obi and Amaechi, to serve only one term if elected, El-Rufai dismissed the claims as empty rhetoric.
“People shouldn’t believe that. Once they get into power, everything changes. In fact, it’s unfair to even make such promises,” he said.
