Gateway Games: Tragedy Strikes as 20 Kano Athletes Die in Road Crash

At least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

The athletes were reportedly on their way back from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident happened on Saturday.

Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, confirmed the incident, revealing that a bus transporting 30 athletes plunged off the bridge, resulting in the death of 20 individuals and leaving several others injured.

“As I am talking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies,” Fagge stated, noting that the death toll might rise.

Ado Salisu, a former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), also confirmed that victims were being taken to Kura General Hospital for treatment.

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, acknowledged the accident but said he could not yet confirm the number of casualties.

“We just received the report of the accident, so I cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at the moment,” he said.
