German-born defender Felix Agu cleared to represent Super Eagles

Felix Agu, the German-born defender, has officially received FIFA clearance to represent Nigeria in international football.

The announcement was made on Saturday via an official statement on the Super Eagles’ Facebook page.

Following this confirmation, the 24-year-old Werder Bremen player is now eligible to wear the green and white jersey.

The German Football Association has formally confirmed that Agu has never played in any official match—senior or junior—for Germany.

His only appearances were in two friendly games for Germany’s U21 team in 2019, which leaves the door open for a nationality switch.

The Super Eagles’ post stated, “Felix Nnaemeka Agu confirmed ok to play for Nigeria’s @NGSuperEagles.

The German FF have written to confirm that the player has never represented them at any official game at the A and Junior level.”

Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Agu has long been on the radar of Nigerian football circles.

He came through the youth system at VfL Osnabrück before signing a four-year deal with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen ahead of the 2020–21 season.

Agu made his Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich in November 2020 and has since established himself as a versatile full-back known for his speed, positioning, and attacking ability. He had a strong 2024–2025 season with three goals in 22 appearances.

In recognition of his performances, Werder Bremen extended his contract in 2022, making him a key player for the club.

Before receiving clearance, Agu was already invited to join the Nigerian squad for training ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.
