Woman Arrested in Lagos for mixing Yam Flour with Harmful Chemicals

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has arrested a woman for allegedly mixing spoiled yam flour, locally known as elubo isu, with toxic colouring agents.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure on Friday via his official X handle. He revealed that the suspect, identified as Mrs. Kehinde Raji, was apprehended following a tip-off from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association, who raised concerns about dangerous food adulteration within the market.

Wahab explained that the suspect was allegedly using hazardous colouring chemicals to mask spoiled yam flour, which was then sold to unsuspecting consumers as safe elubo.

“In response to credible intelligence from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association about unsafe food practices, our KAI enforcement team conducted a swift raid and arrested Mrs. Kehinde Raji,” Wahab stated. “We appreciate the market leadership for exposing this serious public health threat.”

He added that preliminary reports indicate several consumers have already suffered health issues after consuming the contaminated product.
