Ebem Ohafia Faces Ecological Disaster: FENRAD Urges Urgent Erosion Control Measures in Abia

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has raised alarm over a worsening erosion crisis threatening lives and livelihoods in Ebem Ohafia, located in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The group has called on both the Federal Government and the Abia State Government to take immediate action to prevent further environmental degradation and displacement in the community.

FENRAD’s Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that unchecked erosion has already caused significant damage to property, disrupted families and endangered lives.

“The erosion has posed significant threats to the lives and properties of residents in the area, causing severe environmental degradation and economic hardship.”

According to FENRAD, the erosion has escalated over the years and now requires a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach to mitigate the destruction and build long-term community resilience.

They are calling on the Abia State Government to:

Conduct a full-scale assessment of erosion-prone areas in Ebem Ohafia to determine the extent of the damage.

Implement urgent erosion control strategies, such as building drainage channels, reinforcing embankments, and installing preventive infrastructure.

Provide immediate relief—food, temporary shelter and basic essentials—to residents already affected.

Develop a long-term erosion management and conservation plan that includes community participation and environmental education.

“We are now at the point where proactive measures must be taken,” FENRAD urged, “to safeguard lives, prevent further destruction and restore hope in the affected community.”

The group reaffirmed its commitment to defending environmental rights and sustainable development across Abia State, stressing that inaction could lead to irreversible damage.

“We urge the Abia State Government to prioritize the welfare and safety of its citizens by addressing the erosion crisis in Ebem Ohafia promptly.”

With climate-related disasters on the rise, FENRAD’s call comes as a timely reminder that communities like Ebem Ohafia need not only emergency intervention but also long-term policy shifts in how environmental issues are handled.
