Governor Mutfwang Announces the Demise of Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni, Commiserates with Family

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has officially confirmed the passing of retired Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni, a revered military officer, statesman, and elder in the Plateau community. The news of Lt. Gen. Useni’s demise has cast a shadow of grief over the state, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders, institutions, and residents alike.

Governor Mutfwang, in a statement released on behalf of the Plateau State Government, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the distinguished former senator and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Governor described Lt. Gen. Useni as an exceptional leader who dedicated his life to the service of his country and his people. “The passing of Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni is not just a loss to his immediate family but a significant loss to Plateau State and the entire nation,” Mutfwang remarked.

Born on February 16, 1943, in Langtang, Plateau State, Jeremiah Useni began his illustrious military career in the Nigerian Army, where he rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant General. A veteran of the Nigerian Civil War, Useni held various strategic positions in the military, including General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Commander of the Armored Corps. His career peaked when he served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory during the military regime of Gen. Sani Abacha, where he played a pivotal role in the development of Abuja.

Following his retirement from the military, Lt. Gen. Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued to serve the nation. He was elected as a senator representing Plateau South in the National Assembly from 2015 to 2019. Known for his resolute stance on unity, security, and the development of Plateau State, Useni became a prominent voice for his people.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted the late general’s numerous contributions to Plateau State, describing him as a bridge-builder who worked tirelessly to foster harmony among diverse ethnic groups in the state. “His wealth of experience, humility, and unwavering patriotism will remain a beacon of inspiration to generations to come,” the Governor added.

In his condolence message, Mutfwang extended heartfelt sympathies to the Useni family, urging them to find solace in the legacy of excellence, courage, and dedication that the late general left behind. He assured them of the government’s support during this difficult period and called for prayers for the repose of his soul.

As Plateau State mourns the loss of one of its most illustrious sons, the Governor has directed that flags be flown at half-mast across the state to honor the memory of Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni. Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, reflecting the profound impact of his life and service.

Funeral arrangements for the late elder statesman are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
