Gridlock in Gwagwalada: Truck Drivers Protest Clash with Soldiers, Abuja–Lokoja Expressway Shut Down

The Abuja–Lokoja Expressway was thrown into chaos on Wednesday as articulated vehicle drivers staged a protest at Gwagwalada, blocking the ever-busy highway after an altercation with soldiers.

The demonstration, which began in the morning hours, left hundreds of commuters and passengers stranded as traffic built up for several kilometers on both sides of the expressway. Many travelers expressed frustration over the disruption, with some forced to abandon vehicles and trek in order to reach their destinations.

Eyewitnesses said the protest followed a heated confrontation between security operatives and some truck drivers, sparking anger among other drivers who quickly mobilized and barricaded the highway. The blockade brought economic and social activities in the area to a halt, with business owners and motorists counting losses.

Security operatives have since been deployed in large numbers to the scene to restore order and ease traffic flow. Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident or the cause of the initial clash.

The Abuja–Lokoja Expressway, a critical gateway linking the North to the South, has long been a flashpoint for accidents, traffic jams, and security issues. Today’s protest further underscores the challenges of balancing road safety, security operations, and the rights of road users.
