Gunmen Attack Meeting in Anambra, Kill 19 in Cold Blood

At least 19 people were killed in a brutal gun attack in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, after unknown gunmen stormed a meeting venue and opened fire.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, who arrived in two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), targeted a gathering believed to involve indigenes of Ebonyi State. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, some have speculated it may be connected to the re-enforcement of a proscribed sit-at-home order in the region. Others believe it may have stemmed from internal disputes, as the assailants allegedly demanded the minutes of the meeting before unleashing gunfire on attendees.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident but gave a lower casualty figure. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, 10 people were confirmed dead and nine others sustained injuries.

“The armed criminals came in two Sport Utility Vehicles and attacked a gathering, shooting sporadically,” the statement read. “The victims were rushed to the hospital, and regrettably, 10 people were confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”

SP Ikenga added that police, in collaboration with other security operatives, had secured the scene and launched an investigation to apprehend the attackers.

“The command strongly condemns this act of violence and is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.

The attack has sparked fear and heightened tensions in the area, as residents grapple with the rising insecurity in parts of Anambra State.
