Herdsmen Strike Again Just 48 Hours After Tinubu’s Visit Benue

Armed herdsmen have launched a fresh attack on Wannune community in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu visited the state to address its deepening security crisis.

Eyewitnesses told FCNN on Friday evening that the attackers set houses ablaze and destroyed properties, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.

A youth corps member serving in the area described the chaos: “Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging everything,” he said in a desperate SOS message, pleading for urgent security intervention.

This incident comes on the heels of a massacre in Yelewata, Guma LGA, where nearly 200 people were reportedly killed—an atrocity that prompted the President’s visit.

During his stop, Tinubu directed the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to act swiftly against those behind the violence. However, this latest attack has raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of that directive.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized Tinubu’s visit, calling it “a political spectacle” rather than a genuine move to solve the crisis.

The recurring attacks continue to spark nationwide outrage and underline the urgent need for decisive, sustained action to secure Benue communities and bring lasting peace to the region.
