Hit-and-run driver kills police officer in Enugu state
police constable, Uche Ugwu, from Ezimo-Uno, Udenu Local Government of Enugu State, was killed on Tuesday evening by a hit-and-run driver.
FCNN gathered that the deceased was hit by a vehicle shortly after he arrived at his family’s house, situated along Ezimo Road.
The incident threw the community into mourning, as the deceased was said to be an easy-going young man with full potential.
An eyewitness, who identified herself as Ngozi, said Uche had arrived at his country home and was settling into the commercial motorcyclist that conveyed him home when a Lexus car hit him by the roadside.
She said, “It is painful that he got home safely and was killed in front of his family’s house. The driver hit him and parked but, probably out of fear of mob action, zoomed off.
“The motorcyclist that brought the deceased however trailed him, and the driver was later caught. The matter is already with the police.
“They have taken the vehicle to the station, and the driver has been arrested for interrogations.”
Another eyewitness, Meletus Ogbu, said, “Uche would be missed a great deal. He was among the last batch of police constables that passed out after training.
“He hasn’t even received any salary. His dream of serving his fatherland as a policeman has been dashed. We are calling for a proper investigation.
“How could a driver in his normal senses veer off his lane to hit somebody in the pedestrian lane? Uche suffered in vain while undergoing training at the police training school.”
The President of Ezimo Unity Forum, Pharm. Charles Ndu, in a reaction, cautioned drivers to be careful to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.
According to him, “The Ezimo road is smooth and wide enough for an accident of this matter to occur. The accident didn’t happen in the night.
“We should always drive to live. It is worrisome for us as a community to lose such a promising policeman who was ready to serve his fatherland selflessly. Safety on the road is everybody’s business.

“While we pray that such would not happen again, I implore motorists to drive without the influence of alcohol or unnecessary over-speeding. They should also put their vehicles in order.”
The deceased is one of the sons of the traditional ruler of the community, HRN Igwe John Ugwu.
