HND Graduates Protest Against Proposed NYSC Exclusion Policy

A group of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates who obtained their National Diploma (ND) through part-time studies assembled at the Lagos NYSC Secretariat to voice their opposition to a new policy proposal. According to Vanguard, this policy aims to exclude them from participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
The demonstration coincided with the commencement of registration for Batch C Stream II. Protesters brandished placards bearing messages like “Say No to Discrimination in NYSC” and “Equal Rights for All,” emphasizing their demand for immediate withdrawal of the proposed policy.
The graduates argue that this policy unfairly discriminates against them based on their part-time ND background, despite having completed their HND programs. Their protest seeks to ensure equal treatment and opportunities for all graduates, regardless of their initial mode of study.
Majaro Temitope, an HND graduate from Yaba College of Technology, expressed frustration over the policy, calling it discriminatory. He argued that it unfairly targets students who transitioned from part-time ND programs to full-time HND studies.
“Many of us endured the challenges of part-time ND programs, only to face exclusion now. This protest is a peaceful attempt to ignite dialogue,” Temitope said, urging the NYSC Director-General and the Minister of Education to address the issue promptly.
The protesters revealed they had previously reached out to authorities, including the NYSC and JAMB, but had received no response.
Adebola Osunfunrewa, a representative of the Education Rights Campaign, criticised the proposed policy, stating it undermines Nigeria’s educational system.
“In a country grappling with teacher shortages, how can over 3,000 graduates eager to serve be denied the opportunity to contribute?” Osunfunrewa questioned.
Christiana Salwang, the Lagos NYSC Coordinator, represented by Assistant Director Ehimuenma Itohan, addressed the protesters, assuring them that their grievances had been forwarded to the NYSC Director-General.
“The Director-General is actively reviewing this matter and is committed to finding a resolution within the framework of existing policies,” Itohan stated. She also urged the protesters to remain calm as deliberations continue.
As the mobilisation process progresses, the final decision regarding the inclusion of HND graduates with part-time ND backgrounds remains uncertain. The protesters, however, remain hopeful that their voices will lead to a positive outcome.
