How Cobhams Shaped My Career — Omawumi

Nigerian singer Omawumi has credited ace music producer Cobhams Asuquo with playing a pivotal role in her rise to fame, describing his influence as a major turning point in her career.

In a recent interview with HipTV, Omawumi recounted their first meeting, recalling how Cobhams gave her one of her earliest professional opportunities after her stint on Idols West Africa.

“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idol West Africa. The first time we met, he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo — you know he likes to funkify his name. There’s a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” she said.

According to her, that collaboration marked the beginning of several major breaks in her career. The song, though initially uncertain, led to a brand ambassadorship deal that lasted two years and gave her the chance to open for P-Square at four different events.

“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. I also opened for P-Square in four locations,” she explained.

Omawumi further praised Cobhams for his mentorship, saying he taught her essential lessons in vocal delivery and stage posture that continue to shape her performances today.
