“I Won’t End Up at EFCC’s Doorstep — Gov Eno Vows Financial Discipline”

At a media briefing marking his second anniversary in office, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, pledged strict financial discipline, stating he’s taking deliberate steps to avoid any entanglements with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after his tenure.

Speaking candidly, Governor Eno addressed critics of his administration’s performance and highlighted the temptations leaders face to misuse public funds due to mounting pressure. “I will not be swayed by external pressures to act recklessly with the state’s finances,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment to responsible governance, Eno emphasized his administration’s sinking fund policy, which ensures that unspent funds are saved monthly. “I am not one to frivolously distribute money, even to my own family,” he noted, underlining his belief that state funds should be directed toward impactful development.

He criticized the growing culture of entitlement among some groups posing as political supporters, warning that their demands for handouts—and threats of protests when denied—could spiral into security challenges.

Governor Eno also pushed back against media reports claiming the state received N650 billion in three months. “If I had N200 billion monthly, I’d turn Akwa Ibom into Dubai,” he joked. He urged the media to practice responsible journalism, stressing that false figures could cause unnecessary friction with neighboring states.

Eno thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting development initiatives in Akwa Ibom and called for transparency and unity among states, cautioning against the spread of misleading financial claims.

“I’m here to serve, not to enrich myself,” the governor concluded. “My goal is to leave office without ever needing to explain my actions to the EFCC.”
