Idoma Traditional Council Orders Herdsmen to Vacate Benue South
In response to the recent violent attacks and killings attributed to suspected armed herdsmen in Benue State’s southern senatorial district, the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has directed all herders to vacate farmlands across the region to allow farmers begin this year’s planting season without fear.
This decision aligns with an earlier directive issued by the Tiv Area Traditional Council (TATC), which similarly ordered herders out of Tiv land.
The resolution was adopted at an emergency meeting convened in Otukpo, chaired by the Och’Idoma, HRM Dr. John Odogbo, and attended by Local Government Council Chairmen from across Idoma land.
In a statement signed by the Council Secretary, Uloko Adegbe, the IATC expressed deep sorrow over the killings and destruction caused by armed herders, describing the acts as grievous and unacceptable. The Council commended ongoing efforts by the government to restore peace but stressed the need for increased commitment and strategic action to fully secure the area.
“It was unanimously resolved that the state government should engage Fulani herdsmen to vacate all farmlands immediately, so that farmers can resume agricultural activities without fear. All armed herders must leave the area at once to avoid further bloodshed,” the Council stated.
The resolution also called on residents to remain vigilant, collaborate with security agencies, and promptly report suspicious activity to support peace initiatives and prevent further violence.

The Council urged the government to bolster security presence across vulnerable areas, intensify patrols, and initiate conflict resolution programs to forestall future crises.
It also reminded law enforcement agencies of the continued enforcement of the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition Law, stressing that violators must face the law regardless of their status to uphold order and justice.
Furthermore, Local Government Council Chairmen were tasked with ensuring full compliance with the resolution, as the Council urged both the Federal and State Governments to demonstrate the political will necessary to reinforce security across Idoma land and Benue State at large.
