IG Assures Safety for Retired Officers’ Protest, Warns Against Political Hijack

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged full security support for retired police officers as they prepare to stage a peaceful protest over their long-overdue pension entitlements.

Speaking from Force Headquarters, the IG reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all citizens, including those who once served in uniform. He noted that the welfare of retired officers remains a priority, and their peaceful expression of grievances would be respected.

However, Egbetokun issued a stern warning to individuals or groups who may attempt to exploit the protest for political gain or incite unrest.

“We understand the pain and frustration many of our retired personnel are going through. They deserve to be heard, and we will provide the necessary security to ensure their voices are not only safe but also respected,” the IG stated.

“But let me be clear — anyone or any group that seeks to politicize or hijack this protest for ulterior motives will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”

The planned protest comes amid growing agitation among retirees over unpaid pensions and poor post-service welfare. The IG’s assurance is seen as a proactive move to maintain order and reaffirm the force’s support for its veterans, while preventing any breach of peace or political manipulation.
