BREAKING: Yakubu Hands Over To Agbamuche As INEC Acting Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has formally handed over leadership to National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman. The handover, which took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, marks a transition in the leadership of the commission ahead of ongoing electoral preparations.
Professor Yakubu, who has led the commission since 2015, stepped aside following the expiration of his tenure, ensuring a smooth transition in accordance with the commission’s internal procedures. During the brief ceremony, he expressed confidence in Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu’s ability to sustain the integrity and independence of the electoral body, urging staff and stakeholders to extend their full cooperation to her.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, a legal practitioner and long-serving National Commissioner representing the South-South region, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in her. She pledged to uphold the commission’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections, while continuing the reforms initiated under Professor Yakubu’s leadership. Her appointment as Acting Chairman is expected to provide continuity and stability within the nation’s electoral process as INEC prepares for upcoming elections.
