Gunmen suspected to be fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a surprise nighttime attack on a Nigerian Army base in Buni Gari, completely overwhelming the troops and seizing control of the facility.
It was gathered that the terrorists struck under the cover of darkness, catching soldiers off guard. According to local sources, ISWAP fighters looted weapons and supplies before setting the base ablaze. In a bold move, the insurgents remained at the site well into daylight hours.
At sunrise, Nigerian troops regrouped and launched a counteroffensive, triggering a fierce gun battle with the militants. The Nigerian Army confirmed the ongoing engagement via official channels, stating that troops were “currently engaged with ISWAP elements” in the area.
Although the army’s overnight withdrawal may have limited casualties, the loss of equipment and infrastructure was described as extensive. Exact casualty figures remain unverified, but early reports indicate the destruction is significant.
The brazen nature of the attack has sparked fresh concerns about ISWAP’s growing confidence and the military’s capacity to respond swiftly in high-risk regions like northeastern Yobe.
