Bandits ambush, kill three policemen in Kogi

Tragedy struck in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday morning when armed bandits ambushed a police checkpoint, killing three officers.

The attack occurred at the Ofili police checkpoint along the Egbe–Okunran–Pategi Road. Witnesses said the officers had just arrived at their duty post and were alighting from their patrol vehicle when the gunmen opened fire, seizing their rifles after the assault.

According to an eyewitness, the two officers died instantly, while the third succumbed to gunshot injuries about 30 minutes later at the E-unit of ECWA Hospital, Egbe.

Their remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Yagba West Council, Tosin Olokun, expressed shock and grief, describing the slain officers as gallant men who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

He extended condolences to the Nigeria Police Force, the families, and colleagues of the deceased.

In a statement signed by his press secretary, Adeyemi Babarinde Sunday, Olokun assured the bereaved families that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

He announced firm measures to bolster security, including a 24-hour ultimatum for herders who recently migrated into Yagba West to vacate the area.

“This administration remains committed to working with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice,” the statement read.

The brazen attack has reignited concerns over worsening insecurity in Okunland and calls for urgent government and community intervention.
