Jigawa community celebrates drinking water restoration after 32 years

The Kantudu Ward in Birninkudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was thrown in into celebration on Thursday, as residents expressed relief following the restoration of pipe-borne water supply to the community, after 32 years.
The community faced terrible water scarcity for three decades and two years after a technical malfunction at the water source led to the cessation of the public supply.
Some of the residents that spoke with reporters described the development as a much-needed relief.
A local resident, that identified himself as Adamu Isah called the restoration a “miracle” to see water flowing again from the taps after more than 32 years of dryness.
According to Isah: , “It has always been a nightmare to roam the streets of the community in search of non-existent pipe-borne water.
“We often travel for over three hours to neighbouring communities in search of both domestic and drinking water.

It is indeed heartwarming and a relief that the taps have started running again.
Another resident identified as Ado Musa, pointed out that the only available water source in the community had been boreholes, which were unhygienic due to poor maintenance.
A middle-aged man within the vicinity, Haruna Gbogobiri, expressed appreciation to the new LG Chairman and his team for restoring water supply in many communities within three months of assuming office.
“We had some boreholes around many communities but were unserviceable for over the years, so we were left with no other option than to.
consistently patronise water vendors who sell for between N90 and N100 per jerrycan,” he explained.
Some water vendors also expressed delight over the development, saying that they need not walk a distance to purchase water to sell in the communities.
One of them, Mr Habu Ali, said some houses were not connected to the public water supply, adding that they could still fetch from within the community to sell to such residents.
The Birninkudu LGA Chairman, Dr Muhammad Uba, stated that he assumed office with the passion to restore water in the area.
“Being part of the community, I know how people suffered with water because the few houses that have boreholes have been overwhelmed.
“So on assuming office, we committed to how we were going to restore the water as quickly as we could. It has been successful, though work is still in progress.
“When the repairs were conducted and they started pumping the water out, we realised there were old pipes that needed to be replaced. That is what we want to embark on soon,” Uba said.
He, however, appealed to the residents to embrace the project, regard it as theirs, and avoid vandalising the pipelines.
