Three Police Officers Arrested for Alleged N10 Million Extortion in Bayelsa

Three police officers accused of extorting N10 million from a group of young Nigerians have been arrested and detained on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The officers involved are ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine. All four were attached to the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

According to reports, the officers confronted the victims in Yenagoa, forcibly collected the sum of N10 million, and then fled the scene. In response, a swift investigation was initiated, leading to the recovery of the extorted money.

In a statement released on Friday, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Force Headquarters, confirmed that the officers had been apprehended and taken into custody. He highlighted that the recovery of the funds was facilitated through the efforts of the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, expressed strong condemnation of the officers’ actions, reiterating his administration’s zero-tolerance stance towards corruption and misconduct within the force. “The Nigeria Police Force is committed to addressing any form of extortion or abuse of power seriously. These officers will face disciplinary actions through an orderly room trial,” Adejobi stated.

Egbetokun assured the public that the police force remains dedicated to investigating all allegations against its officers thoroughly. He emphasized that there will be strict penalties for any officer, regardless of rank, found guilty of corruption. The IGP’s stance aims to serve as a deterrent and uphold the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force, while also striving for restorative justice for victims of police misconduct.
