Jonathan Criticizes Tinubu’s Suspension of Rivers Governor Amid Political Tensions

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced his disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials over ongoing political conflicts. Jonathan described the move as a dangerous precedent that could undermine democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Jonathan emphasized that elected leaders derive their mandate from the people and should not be arbitrarily removed due to political disputes. He urged the federal government to prioritize dialogue and constitutional processes rather than resorting to executive actions that could destabilize democratic institutions.
“The legitimacy of any elected leader comes from the people, and removing them outside constitutional provisions weakens democracy,” Jonathan stated. He further cautioned that such actions could set a troubling precedent for political interference at the state level, ultimately threatening the nation’s democratic foundation.
The crisis in Rivers State has deepened in recent weeks, with tensions escalating between Governor Fubara and political stakeholders, including his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The rift has led to a series of political maneuvers, with rival factions within the state legislature attempting to assert control over governance.
Political analysts have expressed concerns that Tinubu’s intervention, rather than resolving the crisis, may exacerbate tensions and fuel further division. Many have called for a more diplomatic approach, advocating for reconciliation efforts between warring parties.
Jonathan, known for his stance on democratic principles, urged all political actors to respect constitutional boundaries and work toward peaceful conflict resolution. He also called on the judiciary and relevant institutions to ensure that due process is followed in handling the matter.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with political challenges, Jonathan’s remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of democratic governance, rule of law, and respect for constitutional authority in sustaining the country’s political stability.
