June 12: Police Deploy Personnel to Monitor Osun Protest
The Osun State Police Command on Thursday deployed officers across Osogbo, the state capital, to maintain security and monitor an ongoing protest organized by various groups.
The protest was spearheaded by the Take It Back Movement, which had earlier announced plans for a nationwide peaceful demonstration on June 12 to protest the economic hardship in the country. The group also called on Nigerians and other civil society organizations to join in the movement.
The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the deployment in a statement to reporters in Osogbo, noting that the command was taking proactive measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“So far, the protest has been peaceful, though there are multiple factions involved,” Ojelabi said. “We have the Coalition and the Take It Back (Sowore) groups, among others. In total, there are about three different factions, and we are monitoring all of them closely.”
He further assured residents of the state that the police were committed to protecting lives and property throughout the demonstration.
