The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested an Islamic cleric based in Osun State, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, in connection with a pro-Palestine demonstration, according to Western Post.
Sheikh Molaasan, who leads the Islamic group Ta’awunu Muslimeen, was taken into custody after a video circulated online showing him and his supporters calling for the liberation of Palestine, which they described as being under Israeli occupation.
The footage, which showed members of the group waving the Palestinian flag, quickly went viral and generated widespread discussion on social media. The clip also raised security concerns among observers, especially given Ta’awunu Muslimeen’s history of organising pro-Palestine rallies and similar activities in the past, including an event held in 2018.
During the march in Iwo, participants were seen pledging commitment to the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, some of the coordinated gestures displayed in the video drew criticism, with commentators likening them to a Nazi-style salute.
Public anxiety was further heightened by scenes of children chanting intense religious slogans during the protest, a development that has deepened fears amid Nigeria’s long-standing challenges with religious extremism and insecurity.
