Just in: EFCC arrests wanted socialite Achimugu at Abuja airport

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu on Tuesday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Reports indicate that Achimugu was taken into custody around 5 a.m. shortly after returning from London.
Achimugu had been declared wanted by the EFCC in March due to allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. On the preceding day, the Federal High Court in Abuja, under the direction of Justice I.E. Ekwo, mandated her to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday and also before the court on April 30, 2025.
Her lawyer, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the arrest, stating, “Aisha Achimugu, who arrived voluntarily in the country from London, was apprehended by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.”
Ojukwu criticized the Commission’s actions, claiming it violated a court order. He explained, “Given the proceedings in court on Monday, my client returned with the intention of honoring the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested upon her arrival at the airport.”
He also mentioned that Achimugu had begun a hunger strike in protest of what he described as a violation of her fundamental rights, labeling her a “prisoner of conscience.”
An anonymous source within the EFCC, who was not authorized to speak on the matter, confirmed the arrest, stating, “We had previously declared her wanted and cannot allow her to remain free. Additionally, the court required her to report to us today. We were not prohibited from arresting her; the court simply indicated that if she came, she should not be detained. How can we be certain she would appear before us? Now that we have her, we must ensure she meets the requirement.”
