JUST IN: Super Eagles Legend Peter Rufai Dies at 61

Legendary Nigerian goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, has passed away at the age of 61.

The Super Eagles confirmed his death in a heartfelt tribute posted on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), describing Rufai — affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana” — as a towering figure in the nation’s football history whose impact will endure.

“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the post read.

The national team hailed Rufai’s lasting legacy, celebrating his brilliance in goal and his influence off the field.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” it added.

Rufai was a key member of the iconic Nigerian squad that lifted the 1994 AFCON title and secured the country’s maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup that same year.
