Kano DPO Dies After Mob Attack Over Custody Death

A tragic incident has happened in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State after the death of a motorcycle mechanic in police custody and a shortly after mob attack led to the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

According to a statement by the Kano State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident began on the evening of Saturday, 25th May 2025, when police arrested Abdullahi Musa, a mechanic, for alleged reckless and dangerous riding under the influence of substances.

“Based on public outcry and complaints, a motorcycle mechanic, one Abdullahi Musa, suspected to be under the influence of substances, was arrested and detained for reckless and dangerous riding,” the statement noted.

Few moments after his arrest, the suspect reportedly showed signs of weakness in detention and was taken to Rano General Hospital. He died the following morning, 26th May, around 6:00 am while receiving treatment.

News of his death led to outrage in the community. Irate youths stormed the Rano Police Division. The mob reportedly looted the station, set parts of it and two police vehicles on fire, and destroyed 10 other vehicles.

FCNN gathered that during the confrontation, the DPO sustained serious injuries.

“The Divisional Police Officer was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment,” the police spokesperson confirmed.

Twentyseven suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, visited Rano to assess the damage and meet with the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19). He also ordered an investigation into the incident.

The Command said, “The Commissioner of Police ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to identify the remote and immediate causes of the incidents and bring those responsible for any wrongdoing to justice.”

“The Command promised the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and public order in the State and urges everyone to cooperate with the authorities during this investigation,” the statement added.
