Kano Emirate Showdown: Government’s Next Move Sparks Legal and Political Firestorm

The Kano State Government has addressed misunderstandings and misleading reports regarding the recent Court of Appeal ruling on the ongoing emirship dispute.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, emphasized the importance of accurate information concerning the legal process.
Speaking at a press conference at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, explained that the Court of Appeal’s judgment, delivered on January 10, 2025, affirmed the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law of 2019 and nullified the previous ruling by the Federal High Court in Kano.

However, he pointed out that Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi, who was dissatisfied with the ruling, has taken the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Until the Supreme Court makes a final decision, the Court of Appeal’s judgment remains in effect.
Dederi also clarified that the recent stay of execution issued by the Court of Appeal is a routine legal measure meant to preserve the current situation until the case is resolved by the highest court.
The state government has called on residents to remain peaceful, obey the law, and avoid any actions that could lead to conflict.
Additionally, the government has instructed its legal team to review the court’s decision and determine the appropriate next steps.
The Attorney General, on behalf of the governor, expressed gratitude to the people of Kano for their patience, support, and prayers for peace and stability in the state and across the country.
