Kebbi Discovers Five New Mineral Deposits, Expanding Resources to Over 30

The Kebbi State Government has announced the discovery of five additional mineral deposits, increasing the total number of identified solid minerals in the state to more than 30.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed-BK, revealed this development while discussing its economic significance. The newly discovered resources include Limestone in Jega, Iron Ore in Gwandu, Bauxite in Suru and Dandi, Coal in Birnin Kebbi, and Kaolin in Koko, Bagudo, Argungu, and Dandi.

These minerals add to Kebbi’s already rich natural endowments, which include Gold, Lithium, Copper, Zinc, Lead, Marble, Gypsum, Bentonite, Quartz, Fluorite, Tourmaline, Amethyst, and Manganese, spread across various parts of the state.

According to Ahmed-BK, the discoveries were made under the leadership of Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, who has prioritized developing Kebbi’s mining sector to boost economic growth.

“This is a major step toward diversifying our economy. Since assuming office in 2023, Governor Idris has been focused on revitalizing the mining industry, which had been overlooked for years,” he said.

Despite Kebbi’s wealth of mineral resources, the absence of a dedicated mining commission had slowed exploration and development since the state was created in 1991. The commissioner noted that previous administrations failed to tap into these opportunities, but Governor Idris has taken deliberate steps to establish Kebbi as a significant player in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.

To address security and regulatory issues, the governor halted mining activities in September 2023 to curb illegal operations and enforce stricter regulations. After securing federal approval for greater state involvement, mining resumed under a more structured system.

Governor Idris also created the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development—the first of its kind in Kebbi—to oversee investor relations, enforce regulations, and facilitate exploration. At present, several mining companies are active in the state, while over ten others await licensing.

The commissioner expressed confidence that Kebbi is on the path to industrial and economic transformation, with mining set to become a key revenue source.

“With Governor Idris’ vision, Kebbi is unlocking the full potential of its vast mineral deposits, paving the way for sustainable economic development and industrial growth,” he concluded.
