UPDATED: Nationwide blackout as national grid collapses

Nigeria was thrown into darkness on Wednesday following another collapse of the national electricity grid..
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice issued via its X handle on September 10, 2025.
According to the statement, the outage occurred at 11:23 a.m., disrupting power supply across its franchise areas.
The notice read:“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
AEDC assured consumers that efforts were ongoing to restore supply, stating:
“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. For further updates or inquiries, call 08039070070. WhatsApp: 08152141414, 08152151515.”
This latest collapse adds to the long-running instability of Nigeria’s power sector. The national grid collapsed 12 times in 2024 and over 100 times in the last decade.
In February 2025, a similar incident plunged much of the country into blackout. To tackle the recurring crisis, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) granted licences in April to six private firms and one university to generate and distribute power independently.

Despite these measures, NERC, in its July 2025 report, claimed there was no recorded case of system collapse in the first quarter of the year.
“There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1,” the commission stated.
