Kogi herder arrested for allegedly killing 11-year-old son during grazing

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a herder, Jato Jaye, for allegedly killing his 11-year-old son, Buhari, while grazing cattle in the Agbaja area of Oworo, Lokoja Local Government Area.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, stating that the tragedy occurred on August 19.

According to reports, Buhari had gone grazing with his father but never returned home, prompting his mother, Adama, to raise the alarm. A search party later found the boy’s lifeless body in the bush.

Sources said Jaye was caught at the scene trying to bury the body to cover up the crime.

Police operatives from Division B, Lokoja, documented the incident and took him into custody. The boy’s remains, already decomposing, were released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed, claiming the child had “offended him” while grazing. He admitted to flogging the boy with a Fulani stick, which led to his death.

The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, for further investigation.

Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his line went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
