Lagos Court Jails Two Commercial Drivers for Assault

A Lagos Mobile Court in Oshodi has sentenced two individuals to three months imprisonment each following their involvement in a violent mob attack on officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The incident took place on Monday near the LASTMA Central District (Zone 9) office in Victoria Island and was described by authorities as a deliberate and unprovoked attack by commercial transport operators.

According to LASTMA, the altercation began when officials apprehended a white commercial minibus with registration number SMK 742 YJ for obstructing traffic at McWellen Bridge, heading toward Flag House. The driver allegedly called for backup, prompting the arrival of two more minibuses, including one with the plate number GGE 995 YF, carrying enraged drivers who then launched an attack on the officers.

Security operatives quickly intervened and arrested two suspects at the scene. They were arraigned before the Mobile Court the next day and sentenced without the option of a fine.

Speaking on the outcome, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the court’s decision, calling it a crucial warning to others who might be tempted to act violently toward traffic officials.

“We will not tolerate any form of aggression against our personnel. Our officials are carrying out their lawful duties, and attacks on them are attacks on the rule of law and public safety,” Bakare-Oki stated.

In a statement signed by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, the agency condemned the assault in strong terms and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward violence against its workforce. The agency also reiterated its dedication to upholding traffic laws and ensuring smooth vehicular movement across Lagos State.
