Female corps member narrates brutal assault by Anambra vigilante operatives

A National Youth Service Corps member, Jennifer Elohor, has recounted how she was assaulted by operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group, popularly known as Agunechemba, at her lodge in Oba, Idemili Local Government Area.
In a viral video released on Tuesday, the operatives — armed with guns — stormed the corps members’ residence, accused them of being Internet fraudsters, and assaulted Elohor despite her pleas for help.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Aprokoking on Wednesday, Elohor said the incident happened on July 13 around 5 p.m. She explained that the operatives broke into their lodge, ignored their NYSC identity cards, seized phones and laptops, and dragged them outside violently.
“They beat me, tore my clothes, and even hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod. They forced me into their vehicle, pressing my neck and slapping me repeatedly,” she said.
The incident has sparked outrage across the state, with civil society groups, lawmakers, and rights activists condemning the action and demanding justice.
Responding, the Anambra State Government apologised to Elohor and others who may have suffered abuse from vigilante operatives. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security and leader of Agunechemba, Ken Emeakayi, confirmed that eight personnel involved had been identified, dismissed, arrested, and detained.
Emeakayi admitted there were lapses in the outfit’s operations and urged the public to continue speaking up against misconduct.

He assured that the Soludo administration remained committed to justice, accountability, and reforms that would ensure community policing in the state is more humane.
“We apologise to anyone who has suffered harassment in the hands of Agunechemba personnel. Discipline, respect for human rights and professionalism must always come first,” he said.
