Four rescued as three-storey building collapses in Yaba

A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Saturday, NEMA said the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., trapping several people under the rubble.

“Eyewitness reports differ, with some claiming six people were trapped and others five. So far, four adult males have been rescued alive and taken to hospital for treatment,” the agency stated.

According to NEMA, teams from its office, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other responders promptly mobilised to the site and began search and rescue operations.

The agency noted that the exact number of people still trapped remains unclear, but efforts to locate and evacuate survivors are ongoing.

“Emergency officials have cordoned off the area to ensure safety and smooth rescue operations. Search and rescue efforts will continue through the night, and no effort will be spared to save lives,” NEMA assured.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, often attributed to poor construction practices, use of substandard materials, and weak regulatory enforcement.

Data from the Lagos State government and civil society groups indicate that dozens of such incidents occur each year, resulting in casualties, injuries, and displacement.
