Lagos Task Force Arrests 277 Suspected Pickpockets, Street Urchins in Crackdown
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 277 individuals, including suspected pickpockets and street urchins, during a week-long operation targeting criminal hideouts and environmental violations across the state.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Lagos State Environmental Force’s Director of Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the operation was a strategic effort to enhance public safety and clamp down on criminal activity in identified hotspots.
The enforcement exercise, led by the agency’s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, commenced daily around 1:30 a.m. and was based on intelligence reports and residents’ complaints.
Targeted areas included Victoria Island, Osborne Road, Chevron, Lekki Phase 1 and 2, Ikoyi, Obalende, Ikota, Eko Hotel axis, Oniru Beach, and Falomo Bridge, as well as Ketu, Isale Oja, AP Roundabout, and the railway corridors in Agege.
Akerele described the operation as a significant move toward restoring law and order in areas overrun by criminal elements.
“We are fully committed to protecting lives, property, and the environment throughout Lagos. Anyone threatening the peace of our communities will be dealt with according to the law,” he said.
He added that the arrests were part of a broader, ongoing initiative involving daily enforcement efforts targeting known black spots, illegal settlements, and criminal enclaves.
“All 277 suspects have been formally charged in court in line with Lagos State laws,” he confirmed.

This recent operation builds on previous task force efforts, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to maintaining a safer, cleaner, and more secure environment for all residents.
