Obasa Accuses Lagos Police of Meddling in Assembly Crisis

Impeached former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has alleged police interference in the events leading to his recent removal from office.

Obasa accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of orchestrating a police invasion of the assembly during the impeachment process. He also claimed that over 200 officers surrounded his private residence in Agege, blocking access and restricting his family’s movements.

“I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I am representing my people, and they have returned me six times. If you want to do anything, do it well,” Obasa stated.

He criticized the actions taken during his impeachment, suggesting that his absence from the country was exploited. He further compared his case to previous impeachments in the assembly, highlighting that police were not involved in those instances.

“They should not discredit an innocent person; they should prove their allegations against me. The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence. I believe in the image of our institution; we must not destroy it, and I will never partake in its destruction,” he said.

Obasa expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and President Bola Tinubu, whom he referred to as his political mentor and supporter since the days of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Reflecting on his tenure, Obasa acknowledged Tinubu’s backing during his 2015 bid for Speaker, even amid opposition. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the integrity of the Lagos State Assembly and maintaining its credibility.

The former Speaker’s remarks have added another layer to the controversy surrounding his impeachment, as calls for transparency and accountability in the process continue to grow.
