Maku Police Station Upgraded to Area Command in Oyo

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodele Sonubi, and the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Sikiru Sanda, have highlighted how a tragic incident in 2003 led to a major security upgrade in Ibadan.

The murder of a 300-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) by cultists in the Maku, Iyana Church, Egbeda Local Government Area prompted the Itesiwaju Central Landlord Association to push for a police station. This initiative resulted in the establishment of Maku Police Station, which has now been upgraded to an Area Command Office.

During the commissioning ceremony, which was attended by community leaders, religious figures, lawmakers, and security stakeholders, Sanda emphasized the importance of security in Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. He acknowledged key contributors, including Baba Ajisefini and A.K. Value, who donated the land, as well as the 21 zonal chairmen and secretaries who played significant roles in realizing the project.

Sanda noted that the upgraded facility, completed after 12 years, was funded by the local government, which invested several million naira to meet security standards. The new Area Command Office is equipped with modern facilities to enhance law enforcement operations in the region.

He assured residents of Olootu, Ebenezeri, Amosun, Maku, and surrounding communities of improved security and faster police response times.

“We want to assure the people of these areas that they can now sleep with their two eyes closed because the operations of this Command, under which there would be many Divisional Police Stations, will in no doubt yield positive results. The upgraded police station is expected to reduce crime to the barest minimum and bring more developments to the community because where there is peace, there will be progress,” Sanda stated.

With this upgrade, the Maku Area Command is set to strengthen policing efforts and foster a safer environment for residents of Egbeda and beyond.
